The Best Time To Start Your New Year's Resolution Is Not In January

"My New Year's resolution is to get in shape." Sound familiar? Well, instead of putting so much weight (pun intended) on starting your fitness program Jan. 1, it may be best to begin weeks before.

Tony DeSantis, master trainer for the International Sports Sciences Association, has a message for all those who wait for that symbolic first day of the new year to change their lives.

"I'm calling people out to start it when you have the idea," DeSantis told HuffPost Live's Alyona Minkovski. "If you have an idea that, 'Well, I want to lose some weight,' or, 'I want to get to the gym several times a week and get toned up and get back into shape,' and you have it on Dec. 19, why not start then?"

Setting a new exercise regimen in January is common, according to data from the International Health, Racquet, and Sportsclub Association, which found that 12 percent of gym members enroll during the first month of the year, compared to the 8.3 percent, on average, who sign up during each of the other 11 months, U.S. News reported.

But instead of hopping on the treadmill for the first time in January, DeSantis reminds us that "starting today gets you even closer to your goal tomorrow."
