While Twitter may not be midlifers' first-choice for a social media platform, without question their presence is felt there. And who among us doesn't wish we had Pope Francis' Twitter following of about 5 million? A simple tweet of "To change the world we must be good to those who cannot repay us" got retweeted more than 17,000 times -- just like that.

To change the world we must be good to those who cannot repay us.

Papal celebrity aside, some midlifers used Twitter this year for poking fun. Remember when Conan O'Brien had this to say about former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright?

I picked out my Halloween costume. I’m going as “Slutty Madeleine Albright.”

— Conan O'Brien (@ConanOBrien) October 23, 2014

And she came back at him with this?:

.@ConanOBrien I'm considering going as hunky Conan O'Brien - but that might be too far fetched.

— Madeleine Albright (@madeleine) October 23, 2014

We used Twitter to announce our best family moments of the year:

.@BillClinton and I are over the moon to be grandparents! One of the happiest moments of our life. pic.twitter.com/Cww4r8C9Zt

— Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) September 27, 2014

And certainly weren't shy about posting the occasional selfie:

OK, maybe more than occasionally:

Some took a trip down Memory Lane via the Twitter highway:

Shooting today on the same stage where many years ago I auditioned for The Outsiders. Feels like yesterday.

— Rob Lowe (@RobLowe) November 10, 2014

Who didn't always love Lassie, Al?

@lassie I loved this show growing up pic.twitter.com/MeaFcmDxSB

— Al Roker (@alroker) May 29, 2014

And others' nailed humble-bragging pretty well, we'd say:

I love everything about @johncusack, and am proud to have given him his first starring role in “The Sure Thing.”

— Norman Lear (@TheNormanLear) November 13, 2014

The wit, was always there:

Really enjoying watching watching the world cup. pic.twitter.com/F2bprGkpsB

— Steve Martin (@SteveMartinToGo) June 20, 2014

Sometimes about aging:

Nicole Kidman's new movie is about a woman who forgets everything every time she wakes up. Finally, a horror movie about becoming a senior!

— Bette Midler (@BetteMidler) November 2, 2014

And sometimes just plain silly:

When I direct I like to wear something nice for the crew, you know, so they'll respect me.
