1 Dead, 12 Injured As Car Plows Through Crowd Outside Christmas Concert

One person is dead and up to a dozen others injured, including at least one child, after a suspected drunken driver plowed through a crosswalk outside a church in Redondo Beach, Calif. on Wednesday night.

"We have as many as 12 victims," Lt. Joe Hoffman, a spokesman for Redondo Beach police, told the Los Angeles Times. "Many of them, if not all, are in critical condition."

Many of the victims had been leaving a children's Christmas pageant at St. James Catholic Church, NBC Los Angeles said. One witness told the station he saw bodies flying after a white car sped through a red light and into the pedestrians, who were in a crosswalk.

After hitting the pedestrians, "the vehicle continued driving, ultimately colliding head on into another vehicle," police told local media, according to CBS Los Angeles.

Images from the scene were captures on social media:

The driver, a female, has not yet been publicly named. She was taken to a hospital, arrested and booked on charges of felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter, according to The Daily Breeze.

Photos of the aftermath showed the shoes of victims scattered in the street:

A Daily Breeze reporter described the carnage in a series of harrowing tweets:

“People were walking back to their cars after the St. James school Christmas program, held at St. James parish, had ended. A huge group crossed the street crosswalk when a car ran a red light and plowed into the crowd injuring a number of them, some critically. The community of St. James Catholic School and Parish in Redondo Beach, and the entire Archdiocese of Los Angeles, ask everyone to join them in prayer during this time of tragedy and grief.”
