Dad Geof Grubb's 10-month-old daughter Layla was born with a small cataract in her right eye. To encourage vision development in that eye, she must wear a patch over her left eye for two hours each day, likely until she is 5 years old, dad explained to The Huffington Post.
Layla is not a huge fan of wearing the eye patch, but to make the best of the situation, her dad decided to bring a little fun and creativity into the mix. Grubb doodles designs onto her eye patches, turning her into characters like Spiderman, Kermit the Frog, Catwoman, and a minion from "Despicable Me."
While the chemical engineer-turned-stay-at-home-dad doesn't have an art background, he draws creative inspiration from pop culture, friends and family. Layla approves the decorated patches before dad puts them on.
After sharing his eye patch art on Reddit, Grubb received an overwhelming response from other users. "I've read hundreds of stories from other patchers and parents who did similar things for their kids to make it fun," the dad said, adding, "I also got some good advice and perspective. Some kids have it a lot worse than Layla, having to patch all day or needing eye surgery."
