Note to all purveyors of hot takes: Do not mess with marching bands.
CBS Sports Radio host Jim Rome made the mistake of taking a crack at marching bands during the all-day college football action on New Year's Day. His remark on Twitter did not go unnoticed:
That moment @jimrome became public enemy #1 of bands across the world. You messed with the wrong dorks. #MarchOnRome pic.twitter.com/Q6BBYD8ios

Rome later deleted his tweet, but the #MarchOnRome hashtag was picked up by marching bands, past and present band members and band fans around the country. It appeared in 8,130 tweets in under 24 hours, reported The Sporting News:
Just "running around with our instruments," and serving our country. #ProudtobeinBand #romeisburning #MarchOnRome pic.twitter.com/IXXXdnvbbv

Damn right we are cool @jimrome. Even the football players want to join. #MarchOnRome pic.twitter.com/tKMPRpBI45

Eventually the social media clamor reached Rome. He apologized:
Band nation - I hear you. I was out of line. I apologize. I do not condone bullying of any kind and that was not my intent.
