Why A Grown Man Blames His Addictions On His Mom

Justin’s mom, Laura, got pregnant with him when she was 17 years old. She admits that she smoked marijuana, including in front of her kids, and she allowed Justin to drink from a keg of beer on his sixteenth birthday. Now he’s 32, has slept with more than 300 women, and has problems with alcohol and drugs. Who’s to blame? According to Justin, it’s his mom’s fault. “My mom was irresponsible and selfish,” he says. “She probably should never have had kids. I am the way I am because of my mother and my childhood.”

Laura admits, “I was a baby having a baby, and I had no idea what the hell I was doing.”

Justin’s sister fears her brother could end up hurt or in jail if he doesn’t turn his life around, so she wrote in to Dr. Phil for help.

In the video above, Justin admits he makes more than his share of bad decisions. He says he’s ready to change, but he can’t help laying a lot of his problems at his mother’s feet and his painful childhood. “It’s not that I don’t want to take responsibility as an adult for this,” Justin says to Dr. Phil, “and I’m definitely not trying to make excuses, because as an adult, it is my issue.”

“You do make excuses,” Laura tells her son.

Dr. Phil steps in. “Before you get too self-righteous,” he says, “you haven’t been exactly baking cookies and taking care of the kids when they were growing up, right?”

“I took care of my kids,” Laura says. “But I wasn’t the perfect mom, no, absolutely not.”

On his show Friday, Dr. Phil offers Justin advice on how to change his course in life. Click here to see where you can watch.
