Inside The UK's Thriving Muslim Drag Queen Scene

There is no shortage of queer-friendly establishments in Londontown, but a rising group of drag queens -- pioneered by Muslim men -- is taking over cities like Manchester and Birmingham.

Asifa Lahore, a prominent drag queen based in the U.K., told HuffPost Live's Alyona Minkovski on Wednesday that despite the difficulties he faces being Muslim, gay and a drag queen, the aforementioned British cities have a "thriving" drag scene.

"Drag queens are out, they’re proud," Lahore said. "They’re going to the clubs. They’re going out on the scene and they’re making a lot of difference."

He said the most difficult part about making someone "just come out and bring out their inner queen" is chipping away and breaking down the massive boundaries that religion and culture impose on identifying as gay.
