Artist Uses Muslim Superhero To Battle Anti-Islam Bus Ads

Sometimes it takes a superhero to conquer hate.

Earlier this month, a batch of anti-Islam ads purchased by right-wing extremist blogger Pamela Geller's American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI) appeared on buses in San Francisco. The ads equate Islam with Nazism, featuring a photo of Adolf Hitler and Haj Amin al-Husseini, an anti-Zionism Muslim leader, with the words “Islamic Jew-Hatred: It’s In The Quran," according to the SFGate. They call for the end of all aid to Islamic countries.

While the outlet notes the ads are protected by freedom of speech, an anonymous artist is changing the theme from one of hatred to love.

The Street Cred Facebook page shared photos of the AFDI ads covered with the image of Ms. Marvel Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teenager and Muslim superhero. Instead of messages of Islamophobia, they ads are now covered in messages against bigotry.

The artist behind the new ads hasn't been revealed, but many are offering their praise to the anonymous champion, including Ms. Marvel writer G. Willow Wilson, who says Geller has the right to purchase those ads.

AFDI's anti-Muslim ads have been around since 2010. Groups have been attempting to stamp them out for nearly just as long.
