First Lady Michelle Obama is working to improve education not just in the United States, but on a global level. Obama announced this week that she will join forces with Akie Abe, wife of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe, to launch Let Girls Learn, an international girls education initiative.
Lyric Thompson, a senior policy manager at the International Center for Research on Women, joined HuffPost Live to discuss how these kinds of programs can help make girls' education a priority across the world.
"It's important that initiatives like Let Girls Learn, which are taking that measured approach, be wrapped in some sort of institutional framework that is going to live beyond a particular initiative or a particular administration," said Thompson. "I think that's going be a really important piece of this -- making sure that the initiative rolls out in a manner that is community-based but that also is institutionalized so it's lasting."
