WASHINGTON -- Democrats are jumping with glee over news that Donald Trump is officially exploring a run for president.
Democratic National Committee Press Secretary Holly Shulman issued a three-word response Wednesday, after the real estate mogul announced he was taking formal steps toward a 2016 bid, including the hiring of key staff in the early primary states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.
"Everything is awesome," Shulman said in an email to reporters, in reference to the hit song of the same name from the "The Lego Movie."
Shulman then noted Trump's history of controversial statements -- questioning President Barack Obama's birthplace, opposing immigration reform and commenting on sexual assault in the military.
Trump is heading to New Hampshire this week, where he'll sit down with a group of local veterans and business owners. A recent Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll found that an overwhelming majority -- 74 percent -- of GOP primary voters said they can't see themselves supporting Trump in the race for the White House.
