After a relentlessly snowy and seemingly endless winter for Boston, a positive message has risen from one of the city’s last remaining snowbanks.
On Sunday morning, a large snow sculpture that read "B Strong" appeared in Boston Common. The phrase "Boston Strong" became iconic of the city’s resilience after the deadly bombings at the 2013 Boston Marathon, and the structure appears just a week before this year’s marathon on April 20.
“With so many events going on -- the trial, the marathon, the end of the snow season -- everyone was sick of winter, and putting it behind them, so I decided to build it,” the sculptor George Li told The Boston Globe. “It means so many different things to so many different people.”
Li began building the sculpture at 4 a.m. on Sunday after he had difficulty sleeping, and completed his work around 11 a.m. He was joined early in the morning by Sergio Kinsala to complete the sculpture, who saw Li while walking his dog in the park.
“It’s in the spirit of Boston Strong, plus we just had a rough winter,” Kinsala told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.
After receiving more than 100 inches of snow this past winter, Li developed the hobby of building snow sculptures with his 4-year-old son. According to The Boston Globe, Li will continue working on the sculpture to keep in intact until Marathon Monday.
“I think it encapsulates what everyone is feeling in Boston,” Li said.
