Author Megan Abbott is developing an MTV series based on her book The Fever, working with Sarah Jessica Parker’s Pretty Matches Productions, and producer Karen Rosenfelt (who worked on The Book Thief, The Devil Wears Prada and Twilight). Abbott will also write the pilot episode.

The Fever follows a group of adolescent girls who begin to fall ill with a strange fever, symptoms of which include convulsions and foaming at the mouth. EW’s Stephan Lee writes in his review of the book, “Throughout, Abbott grounds the story in unsettling realism… But it’s the final act, marked by a gothic, deeply weird twist, where the fever gets you, too.”

“We are thrilled to be working with Megan Abbott, one of the most exciting voices working in literature today,” said Parker and Pretty Matches Productions in a statement. “A master of suspense, Megan’s drama is a searing portrait of the female adolescent psyche that is on haunting display in her gripping novel, The Fever.”
