“I think the only way to tell you who I am these days, is to sing a song,” says Nina Simone in the first trailer for What Happened, Miss Simone?, which debuts exclusively above. “We’ll start from the beginning.”

But as directed by Academy Award-nominee Liz Garbus (The Farm: Angola, USA), What Happened, Nina Simone? doesn’t just use music to tell Simone’s story. Garbus unearthed hours of rare audio recordings of Simone discussing her life, and weaves those clips with concert footage and select present-day interviews to provide the film with a complete portrait of the iconic performer.

“Nina Simone’s brilliance would forever change the musical landscape and yet she never fully got her due,” Garbus said in a statement. “She struggled against demons from both within and without, and her life was both a reflection of the legacy of racism in America as well as an extraordinary example of the power a righteous voice can bring to bear against even the most wicked historical legacies.”

What Happened, Miss Simone? debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Netflix will premiere the documentary on its service starting June 26. Watch the full trailer above.
