'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Star Perfectly Explains How To Play Gay Without Stereotypes

Andre Braugher's "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" character, Capt. Raymond Holt, may be gay, but that's only "one facet of his development," the veteran actor told HuffPost Live in an April 30 conversation.

The TV star recounted how when he originally took the part, his son "was upset."

"He says, 'What are you doing, Dad? Why are you playing the gay police captain?'" Braugher recalled. "And I said, 'Well, no, he's a police captain that's gay.'"

When his son didn't understand the difference between the two, the actor explained, "Well, one's going to be the butt of the joke. One is eventually wearing hot pants and singing 'YMCA' on camera in some embarrassing way. And the other is going to be a man with plenty of dimension who happens to be gay."

"And for me, that distinction is critical," Braugher continued. "It's key."
