After Turan Caudle was shot in the head earlier this year, doctors didn’t think the teen would survive.
“He was in ICU,” the 17-year-old’s mother Sherita Caudle told WRC-TV. “The doctors said he wouldn't make it through that night. If he did make it, he wouldn't be able to walk and talk.”
Caudle, however, has somehow beaten the odds.
Not only did the young man survive the ordeal, he is on the road to recovery and is now “relearning to walk, talk and understand his mother,” according to WRC-TV.
Caudle was allegedly shot in the head by his friend, 16-year-old Delano Dunmore, in January after getting into an argument about a video game. Dunmore allegedly also shot another friend, before turning the gun on himself. All three individuals survived; and Dunmore is awaiting trial.
As WUSA9 reported in April, the trio were teammates on the Frederick Douglass High School football team. The team had just won the Division II state championships a few weeks before the shooting.
When Caudle was rushed to the hospital, doctors discovered that the teen had suffered severe brain trauma. The bullet had ”entered the back left part of his skull … and exited above his left eye,” Caudle’s doctor told the news outlet. To save his life, surgeons removed a large portion of the left side of the teen's skull.
Within months, Caudle had made “astonishing” progress, per WUSA9. He began walking, and then running. And now, he’s reportedly able to respond to questions with one-word answers.
At the beginning of May, the teen returned home from the hospital. His family said that he was adjusting “well.”
Update: Turan has been home a little over 1 week now and has adjusted well. He is doing well and started outpatient...

Caudle’s mom told WUSA9 that her son’s positive spirit and unwavering resolve are what’s getting him through this challenging time. The teen's got a long way to go, but his family remains hopeful.
"He's so determined," Caudle's mom said.
