The Westboro Baptist Church tried and failed to diss Ireland after the nation legalized same-sex marriage by popular vote.
The hate group posted images of the Irish flag with angry text overlaid to condemn the 60 percent majority who voted for same-sex marriage on Saturday. However, Westboro Baptist couldn't seem to get the flag right and ended up dissing the Ivory Coast. The European and African nations have very similar flags. Ireland's is striped green, white and orange from left to right, while the Ivory Coast's is orange, white and green.
The gospel is flying all around Ireland today! Thumbs did the walking - we didn't go anywhere. God gave the increase! pic.twitter.com/8BZf9o6Zy0

After the group was called out for the apparent error, they claimed they purposefully turned the flag around to signify distress.
Only way we could turn it "upside down." π

RT @thejournal_ie: WBC: "God Hates Ireland" but they got our flag wrong http://t.co/7fhsdWQpUg
You Irish have been flying your flag ALL WRONG! cc: @BrianMLloyd @PTHosford pic.twitter.com/FnB1SpRJEk

But the confusion was clear.
You flip a flag upside down to show a nation is in distress. That's what we're trying to do, @thejournal_ie! >> https://t.co/z8aVqXg5ow

Alas, God apparently hates the Ivory Coast, too.
Incidentally, God hates the Ivory Coast ==> http://t.co/1gWiMoXcAm
