John Waters On Being 'Bad At 70' And Hitchhiking Across The Nation

Director John Waters On Being 'Bad At 70'

When most of us think of reinvention, we think of a new haircut, a new hobby or a new job. But for John Waters, it meant hitchhiking cross-country with complete strangers.

The 69-year-old says he wanted to surprise not only the readers of his aptly-titled book, "Carsick," but also himself. "I wanted to give myself some street cred," Walters joked on HuffPost Live. "Every day I'm thinking, 'How can you be bad at 70?'"

Waters said he's surprised it all "ended up fine," and says he still finds it hard to believe he completed the cross-country trip from Baltimore to San Francisco.

Besides surprising himself, Waters said he was most amazed by the types of people who were most generous -- those who appeared to have the least to share. Watch the video above to hear more about Waters' many hitchhiking adventures.
