In an ironic twist, the infamous suspect charged with murdering nine unarmed black people in a church in Charleston is jailhouse neighbors with another infamous suspect who is also charged with murdering an unarmed black man in Charleston.
Dylann Roof is in the cell next to ex-Charleston cop Michael Slager, Charleston County sheriff's Maj. Eric Watson confirmed to the Associated Press Friday.
Roof is charged with the Wednesday massacre inside the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church; Slager was indicted earlier this month for the murder of Walter Scott
Roof, who appeared remotely via closed-circuit TV to Judge James Gosnell's courtroom for his Friday afternoon bond hearing, has had no visitors since he was taken into custody Thursday.
"To my knowledge, family members have not reached out to visit Mr. Roof," Watson told HuffPost.
Gosnell set Roof's bail for weapons charges at $1 million; Roof was not allowed bond on the murder charges.
The 21-year-old is charged with nine counts of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Roof's attorney, Ninth Circuit Public Defender Ashley Pennington, didn’t enter a plea.
