Woman's Poignant Video Shows Why We Should Talk About Pregnancy Loss

According to the National Institutes of Health, roughly 15 to 20% of pregnancies in the U.S. end in miscarriage, usually during the first seven weeks. Yet despite how common miscarriages are, many people still don't feel comfortable talking about pregnancy loss out loud.

In this new video from BuzzFeed, writer Jennifer Chen talks about her experience with her miscarriage and how support from friends and social media helped her cope with the grief. Titled "Why I Don't Want My Miscarriage To Stay Secret," the video tells the story of Chen's miscarriage -- from her struggles with grief to the complications she suffered from the D&C (dilation and curettage) procedure to remove tissue from her uterus. "I just wanted to not exist anymore," she recalls.

The writer discusses the sense of shame and silence surrounding miscarriage. "No one I knew ever posted to Facebook, 'I had a miscarriage today,'" she said. But opening up to close friends and discovering online support with the hashtag #IHadAMiscarriage were instrumental to her recovery.

The video caption sums up Chen's biggest takeaway: “I first thought my miscarriage was shameful, and unusual. I’ve since learned that it’s just something women don’t want to talk about -- but should.”
