Disney Removes Confederate Flag From Walt Disney World's Epcot Theme Park

Disney has removed a version of the Confederate flag from the Epcot theme park at Walt Disney World in Florida, according to multiple reports.

The flag was part of a display inside the American Adventure in the theme park's World Showcase area.

The flag that had been on display was not what's commonly referred to as the "Confederate battle flag," but the third and final flag of the Confederacy, which was used from March 4, 1865 until Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox on April 9 of the same year, according to USFlag.org.

The flag, which can be seen in the tweet above, is mostly white and features the "Southern Cross" image in one corner and a single red stripe at the opposite end.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that the flag had been taken down "recently" and said at least one visitor was pleased with the removal.

"I think in this day and age we shouldn't be promoting a part of our history we're not proud of," Sheri Labowski, who was visiting from Connecticut, told the newspaper.

The move comes as retailers around the country are removing merchandise with Confederate images. Also on Thursday, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley signed a bill into law permanently removing the Confederate battle flag from the state capitol, a month after nine black people were massacred in a Charleston church.

The American Adventure attraction at Epcot features audio-animatronic characters speaking about U.S. history, and includes scenes from the Civil War.
