Nate Berkus Shares His Secret To Making A Truly Beautiful Bed

2 Ways To Make Any Bed Look More Inviting

Easy on the duvets, bolsters and shams. When it comes to making a proper bed, interior designer Nate Berkus forgoes piles upon piles of decorative pillows in favor of simple, clean lines. Two decorative pillows are all you need, he insists, to make a beautiful bed.

In this step-by-step tutorial from "The Oprah Winfrey Show," he shares his two fail-proof bed-making formulas that still hold true today.

Clean and Classic

  1. Fold a top sheet over a blanket or quilt and tuck them in.
  2. At the end of the bed, fold a duvet or comforter.
  3. Along the headboard, prop up four pillows in standard pillow cases.
  4. Accent with two decorative pillows.

When choosing accent pillows, don't fall prey to the matchy-matchy bed set. "You don't have to buy those with the bedding, you can find those later at any store," Berkus says.

Warm and Cozy

  1. Fold down the top of the comforter or duvet. Add a blanket underneath for extra warmth.
  2. At the top of the bed, layer two Euro shams with two standard shams.
  3. Accent with two decorative pillows.

Simple enough, right? "If you have those elements, you can make a beautiful bed," Berkus promises.
