Easy on the duvets, bolsters and shams. When it comes to making a proper bed, interior designer Nate Berkus forgoes piles upon piles of decorative pillows in favor of simple, clean lines. Two decorative pillows are all you need, he insists, to make a beautiful bed.
In this step-by-step tutorial from "The Oprah Winfrey Show," he shares his two fail-proof bed-making formulas that still hold true today.
Clean and Classic
- Fold a top sheet over a blanket or quilt and tuck them in.
- At the end of the bed, fold a duvet or comforter.
- Along the headboard, prop up four pillows in standard pillow cases.
- Accent with two decorative pillows.
When choosing accent pillows, don't fall prey to the matchy-matchy bed set. "You don't have to buy those with the bedding, you can find those later at any store," Berkus says.
Warm and Cozy
- Fold down the top of the comforter or duvet. Add a blanket underneath for extra warmth.
- At the top of the bed, layer two Euro shams with two standard shams.
- Accent with two decorative pillows.
Simple enough, right? "If you have those elements, you can make a beautiful bed," Berkus promises.
