President Barack Obama praised the removal of the Confederate flag from the grounds of the South Carolina Capitol on Friday.
Obama tweeted about the move just after the flag was taken down:
South Carolina taking down the confederate flag - a signal of good will and healing, and a meaningful step towards a better future.
— President Obama (@POTUS44) July 10, 2015
Vice President Joe Biden also tweeted about the removal of the flag:
Courage in South Carolina – a divisive symbol comes down. The healing continues. God bless the Mother Emanuel victims and their families.
— VP Biden (Archived) (@VP44) July 10, 2015
South Carolina lawmakers voted to ban the flag from the Capitol grounds after a shooting at a historic black church that left nine people dead. Gov. Nikki Haley (R-S.C.) signed the bill into law on Thursday.
The flag had flown at a Confederate memorial on the South Carolina Capitol grounds since 2000, when it was removed from its perch atop the statehouse.
