Iran and six world powers announced on Tuesday they have reached a historic agreement for the future of Tehran's controversial nuclear program. The deal comes after months of contentious negotiations, and will curb Iran's nuclear capabilities in exchange for relief from crippling sanctions.

Jubilant Iranians living at home and abroad took to social media in the wake of the announcement to celebrate.

Many Iranians lauded the day as a historic moment and a return to Iran's former glory. Others celebrated the deal as a crucial first step toward better relations between the U.S. and Iran.

#IranDeal trended on Twitter, and #IranWinsPeace was tweeted 2.8 million times. Iranians shared photos of Iran's foreign minister Javad Zarif, thanking him for his role in the negotiations.
