Jeh Johnson Admits He Made A Mistake In Using Gmail On Work Computer

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson admitted on Tuesday that he made a mistake in using a personal e-mail account on DHS computers.

Johnson said that he realized the practice was bad after Bloomberg published a story on Monday that detailed how Johnson and 28 other officials used personal accounts on their work machines.

“To be perfectly honest, this is something that I had for a while,” Johnson said at a breakfast hosted by Politico on Tuesday. “And when I read the story I said, ‘Whoops, this is not a good practice, so I should discontinue it.’"

Johnson also said that he had not used his personal Gmail account for work business, something that DHS policy prohibits.

In March, The New York Times reported that Hillary Clinton exclusively used a private e-mail account for official business while serving as secretary of state. Clinton said that she used one account out of convenience and turned over more than 30,000 emails to the State Department but had also deleted nearly 32,000 messages that weren't related to official business.
