Watch Cute Kids Sing John Oliver's Song For DC Statehood

A group of cute kids gathered in front of the U.S. Capitol on Sunday morning to advocate for statehood for the District of Columbia, singing comedian John Oliver's D.C. statehood song.

On last Sunday's episode of "Last Week Tonight," Oliver dedicated a segment to explaining the fight for statehood in Washington, D.C. At the end, Oliver led kids in a rendition of the famous "50 States Song" -- with new lyrics.

Alabama and Alaska,
Arizona, Arkansas
California, Colorado
Connecticut and more
There are 50 states in total
And we’ll sing their names with glee
But there’s one place that gets shafted
And it’s Washington, D.C.

All the rest of us can choose a path

That we think is best

But any choice that D.C. makes

Is easily suppressed

‘Cause some asshole with a rider
Who might live in Tennessee
Can destroy a needle program
For preventing HIV.

The District of Columbia has no voting representation in Congress, but Congress has substantial control over the city's budget and laws. Congress has frequently blocked or changed measures that D.C. residents voted to approve, such as marijuana legalization and needle exchange programs. While the District has a representative in Congress, Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D), she has no formal powers.

"She basically has pretend power, like a child watching 'Dora the Explorer,'" Oliver said.

Oliver's segment has inspired a renewed fight for D.C. statehood among the city's residents and elected officials. A community group called The Hill Is Home organized Sunday's singalong.
