Britain's Hottest Ever Chili Pepper Is Ready To Melt Your Face Off

Meet the Komodo Dragon.

Do you want a kick in the face?

If so, we recommend a trip to Great Britain, where Tesco says it now sells the country's hottest chili pepper to be sold in a British supermarket.

It's called the Komodo Dragon, and it ranks a mouth-melting 1.4 million Scoville units, just a notch below the Carolina Reaper (which, at 1.5 million units, is recognized as the hottest pepper in the world). To put it in perspective, jalapeños come in at 3,500 units.

Tesco chili pepper buyer Eleanor Mansell said the pepper stands out because it has a "delayed reaction that lulls you into a sense of false security. At first you can taste a wonderful hot fruitiness but then after about 10 seconds the full might of this little demon hits you and your whole mouth is aglow," she said.

The Komodo Dragon pepper, now sold at Tesco stores in England, is the country's hottest commercially-grown chili pepper.

The Komodo Dragon pepper is grown on a 7-acre farm in Bedfordshire, owned by Salvatore Genovese, the UK's largest pepper producer. He credits the popularity in hot peppers to the nation's growing interest in curries, Mexican food and pizza.

The pepper, which is in season now, is currently available in 500 Tesco stores, but will roll out completely in November.

If you grab one, adhere to the warning label on the package, which ominously instructs, "Do not consume whole. Do not touch without gloves."

And listen to Genovese's tips: "I’d seriously advise anyone not experienced in eating really hot chili peppers to have some milk or yogurt ready as a standby to douse the flames.”

And maybe a fire extinguisher, because you never know.
