Mom Allegedly Drowned Her Twin 2-Year-Old Boys

She also allegedly told police she tried to kill a third child.

An Arizona mom said she intentionally drowned her twin 2-year-old sons and tried to drown a third child this weekend, authorities reported.

Mireya Alejandra Lopez, 22, allegedly admitted in a police interrogation that she drowned her two sons in a bathtub and tried to drown a third child before family members stopped her.

The twins' grandmother called 911 on Sunday, Tucson News Now reported. Police arrived to find the two boys "lying unresponsive" on a bed inside a home, according to a news release from the Avondale Police Department. Authorities tried to save the boys, who were taken to separate hospitals and pronounced dead, the release said.

The third child was unharmed and police did not say what relation, if any, the child has to Lopez.

Lopez faces two counts of homicide and one count of attempted homicide.

The twins' father, Sam Avitia, told Tucson News Now that Lopez suffers from depression and anxiety, but had never been violent or threatening in the past.

Avondale Police Sgt. Brandon Busse told The Huffington Post he didn't know if Lopez had a lawyer assigned to her yet.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is holding Lopez at its 4th Avenue Jail, and did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
