Emilio Estefan, Shakira And Others Sound Off Against Bigotry With "We're All Mexican"

Estefan says he wants "to send a message that represents unity.”

Emilio Estefan is fighting against the recent anti-Latino sentiments being spewed by conservative politicians and political pundits in the best way he knows how: through music.

Billboard reports the Grammy-winning producer has collaborated with a diverse group of Latino artists to produce and record a song called, “We're All Mexican,” which is slated to debut later in September.

"There’s a message being sent out to the world where people are giving opinions that are plain wrong," Estefan tells Billboard magazine in an exclusive interview. "We need to lift up our pride and show the world what we’re doing." Estefan goes on to explain that the song isn’t a direct response to Trump, who he says he’s known for many years. “Trump doesn’t represent anything to me,” explains Estefan. “Everyone has their opinion, and he can have whatever opinion he wants, as long as he doesn't humiliate my people."

The Cuban-American producer tells Billboard he was moved to produce the track after listening to someone on television make false and vindictive anti-Latino statements. “[The song] is an answer to the sentiment that we’ve progressed [as Hispanics] and we need to let people know that,” he explains, later adding, “I want to send a message that represents unity.”

The song is set to be released later in September and will feature reggaeton singer Wisin, Wyclef Jean, Thalia, Shakira, Carlos Santana and, of course, his wife Gloria Estefan, among many other diverse Latino artists.
