Watch Pope Francis Greet Crowds Outside The U.S. Capitol

"I'm so grateful for your presence here."

After speaking to a joint meeting of Congress Thursday morning, Pope Francis addressed the throngs of people gathered on the U.S. Capitol's West Lawn.

Appearing aside Vice President Joe Biden, House Speaker John Boehner (who teared up as the crowds cheered for the pope) and other congressional leaders, the pope spoke briefly in Spanish and led the crowd in prayer.

"I'm so grateful for your presence here," he said. "I ask you all please to pray for me and if there are among you who do not believe or who cannot pray, I ask you please to send good wishes my way."

"Thank you very much, and God bless America," he concluded.
