The list was compiled from U.S. Census Bureau and Bureau of Labor Statistics data on local costs of basic needs like housing and utilities, transportation, food and health care. It's important to point out that the cities on the list are places where $100 would just cover these basics -- not additional expenses, such as recreation, socializing, clothing and leisure travel.
Costs are listed for the median cost of having a mortgage, renting and even owning a home. Even properties that are paid off are still subject to costs like property tax and insurance.
The cities on the list are spread across the U.S., with different climates and cultures, but there is one thing they all have in common: access to high quality health care. Many of the cities are home to or closeby to top-ranked hospitals and those with quality geriatric care.
