Maisie Williams Has No Interest In Playing 'The Girlfriend'

Maisie Williams prefers to play characters who are actual human beings.

In an interview with Radio Times, the "Game of Thrones" star opened up about the lack of non-"accessory"-type roles available for women in the industry.

"I didn't realize when I was younger that women were written so badly, but going further into this career, I realized there are a lot of really bad characters, that it's not common to come across females who aren't just 'the girlfriend,''' she said, according to Mashable.

"I hope to never have to play a character that is only there to benefit a male lead," Williams continued.

Williams made similar comments about sexist casting breakdowns in an interview with the London Evening Standard earlier this year.

"It will say 'Derek: intelligent, good with kids, funny, really good at this' and then it will say 'Sandra: hot in a sort of cute way' -- and that’s all you get," she said. "That’s the way your character is described, so going into an audition you are channelling 'hot,' which isn’t like a person, that’s not who a person is. That’s what I see and that’s what needs to change."
