While tabloid covers and columnists rush to blame the Kardashians for the downward spiral that landed Lamar Odom in hospital earlier this month, longtime family friend Lance Bass is standing up for reality TV clan.

"They're doing good," the former boy band member told Us Weekly at the Environmental Media Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday. "I was just over at Kris' house the other day and -- I mean, they put their lives on hold. I give it up to those girls. Love them or hate them, they really stepped up to the plate and saved his life."

It's true the family dropped everything to be at Odom's bedside and organized his transfer to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in LA, where they believed he would receive the best medical care possible.

Bass went on to call the situation "devastating," noting that momager Kris Jenner thinks of Odom as a son.

"This is like [Kris'] son and it's really sad. He's improving daily, which is great. They have high hopes," he said.

Odom was hospitalized on Oct. 13 after he was found unconscious at a Nevada brothel. Last week, authorities said they suspected that Odom had overdosed on cocaine -- a theory which was apparently confirmed by blood tests they later received, according to TMZ.

The 35-year-old remains in the hospital and has a long road ahead of him. On Saturday, sources told TMZ that Odom's brain scans showed that he suffered 12 strokes while unconscious, which has affected his motor skills. What's more, People magazine reported that he was a in a "very fragile state" as he underwent surgery in connection to his pneumonia last Thursday and is still receiving dialysis.
