Honolulu police charged 42-year-old Ranier Ines on Friday in connection with the brutal kidnapping and robbery of his coworker, 25-year-old Kele Stout.
According to court documents obtained by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Stout was kidnapped, robbed, blindfolded and beaten, then shot at least five times before escaping his captors and driving himself to the hospital.
The two men got into an argument on Sept. 16 while working on a job together for a local countertop manufacturing company. Ines reportedly accused Stout of going through his backpack.
According to a police affidavit, Stout was driving himself and Ines away from the job site in a company van when Ines allegedly pulled out a gun and forced Stout to drive to a home in Waianae on the west side of Oahu.
When they arrived at the house, according to local news station Hawaii News Now, Stout was forced to sit in a garage blindfolded with his hands tied behind his back.
Stout said that Ines and a second unidentified man beat him and, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, he heard Ines tell the second man "to ditch the body" and "handle him."
The unidentified man then took Stout to another location in the van and reportedly told Stout he was "going to die," before shooting him in the face, back and buttocks.
As Stout lay in the back of the van, he allegedly heard the man making plans to burn the car with his body inside, according to Hawaii News Now.
Then, according to Stout's account in the police affidavit, the man left the van with the engine running, and Stout climbed into the driver's seat and drove to the parking lot of the nearby Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center.
According to a media release by the Honolulu Police Department, Stout arrived at the health center with "numerous gunshot wounds" and "went unconscious upon arrival." He later woke from the coma and identified Ines to police, according to the Star-Advertiser.
Police officials believe the man who shot Stout remains at large and is wanted for attempted murder.
