Thinking Of Asking Cate Blanchett About Her Sexual Orientation? Think Again.

Cate Blanchett is not interested in questions about her sexuality. Period.

During a recent interview with The Guardian, the actress's much-publicized comments about her past relationships with women came up. The 46-year-old made the comments while promoting her film, "Carol," based on the 1952 Patricia Highsmith novel The Price of Salt about a young department store clerk who falls in love with an older woman.

“Look,” Blanchett said, “I also just played Mary Mapes [in "Truth"], who’s a journalist. No one asked me how long I’d been to journalism school. If I played someone who has an affair, I think a reporter would probably think twice before asking, ‘Ooh, how many affairs have you had?’ It would be a slightly delicate area. But there are no holds barred about asking me whether I’ve had relationships with women. And so I facetiously said, ‘Oh yes, I’ve had many relationships with women’ – because frankly, who hasn’t? Of course I said it in inverted commas. But the inverted commas didn’t make the page.”

In May, after the remark made headlines, Blanchett said no one should care about her personal relationships, same-sex or not.

“But in 2015, the point should be: Who cares? Call me old-fashioned, but I thought one’s job as an actor was not to present one’s boring, small, microscopic universe, but to make a psychological connection to another character’s experiences."
