These Big Stores Are Closing On Thanksgiving

But many will be open early on Black Friday.

Black Friday has become such a phenomenon that some stores were even launching sales on Thanksgiving last year, keeping their employees from family dinners and festive celebrations.

This year, a slew of major companies and stores have pushed back against that trend and will remain closed on Thanksgiving. Below are 20 of the biggest stores that will be shutting their doors on turkey day -- though many will be still be opening early on Black Friday.

Costco

T.J. Maxx

Nordstrom

Nordstrom is closed for business on Thanksgiving, though some employees will still be coming in to work. “[F]or the past 40+ years, some of our employees work on Thanksgiving eve and into the wee hours of the morning on Thanksgiving Day to decorate our stores with our holiday trim. This is mostly a group of employees who have volunteered to be there and some bring along relatives or friends to join in,” a spokesperson told ThinkProgress.
Barnes & Noble

You'll have to wait an extra day to buy a gift card as a Christmas present for that awkward relative you don't know anything about. The bookseller will be closed on Thanksgiving.
Sam's Club

In a post on the department store's Facebook page, the company said "We hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving! We will be closed on turkey day, but we open 2 hours early on Black Friday at 8 a.m. ... From our family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving, everyone."
Burlington Coat Factory

DSW

"While many retail stores will be opening for business on Thanksgiving Day, this year we continue the DSW tradition of keeping ours closed. Family time is extremely important to us, and we want our associates to enjoy the holiday with their loved ones," DSW said in a statement. "Our stores will remain closed until 7 a.m. on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving."

The outdoor recreation superstore took a bold stance this month, announcing that it would close on both Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

"For 76 years, our co-op has been dedicated to one thing and one thing only: a life outdoors. We believe that being outside makes our lives better. And Black Friday is the perfect time to remind ourselves of this essential truth," said President and CEO Jerry Stritzke. "We're a different kind of company—and while the rest of the world is fighting it out in the aisles, we’ll be spending our day a little differently."

Reuters
Staples will be closed for Thanksgiving but will open its doors bright and early at 6 a.m. for Black Friday shoppers.
