Colombian Government Takes Steps Toward Fully Legalizing Abortion

Abortion in Colombia is illegal except in cases of rape or incest, or where the woman's life is in danger, but the Colombian government is taking steps to ease up on those restrictions, Fox News Latino reports.

Colombian Attorney General Eduardo Montealegre said his office plans to introduce a bill to Congress that would legalize abortion in all cases for the first 12 weeks of a pregnancy. However, even if the bill makes it through both the country's conservative Congress and Senate — something Montealegre admitted would be difficult — it doesn't legalize abortion past the first trimester (with the exceptions of rape, incest, and where the mother's life is in danger, as stated above).
