Why The NYPD Waved The French Flag At The Thanksgiving Parade

New York City police officers show their solidarity over the Paris terror attacks.

NEW YORK -- The New York Police Department stood in solidarity with France over the Nov. 13 Paris terrorist attacks, as marching officers waved a French flag next to the American one at the 89th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday.

Officials estimated that about 3 million people attended the parade, despite heightened security concerns because of the Paris attacks, which killed at least 130 people. A heavy police presence guarded subway entrances and crowded areas while helicopters swirled overhead.

New York implemented new safety protocols this week. Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) announced two new initiatives designed to make people more aware of their surroundings, including a mobile app which enables people to submit photos or messages if they witness suspicious activity.

The NYPD rolled out its new Critical Response Command last week, which trains a designated group of 527 officers in counterterrorism tactics.
