WATCH: Rosie Perez On The Stigma Surrounding AIDS

The actress won a humanitarian award for her AIDS activism

Actress Rosie Perez sat down with HuffPost Rise on World AIDS Day, December 1, to talk about the many struggles that those living with HIV or AIDS face.

Perez, who was given a humanitarian award by Brooklyn-based organization Bridging Access To Care for her AIDS activism efforts, said that the stigma surrounding a positive diagnosis was a huge problem for the community.

"You look at somebody like Charlie Sheen, he kept it quiet for four years because of the stigma," she said. "The things that people were saying on social media [were] shameful. It was shameful. And then we wonder why people hide and deny."
