Patton Oswalt Discusses Why 'Comedy Is Pretty F**kin' Essential'

"It's the responsibility of comedians to remain as irresponsible as we can in terms of mockery and language."

Patton Oswalt recently sat down with writer and producer Jessica Pilot as part of The Village Voice's "This Is Stand-Up" series to discuss the role of the comedian in an era of "PC police" and "social justice warriors."

"We're not the guardians and we're not the saviors," said Oswalt, "but I think we are the safety valve." He goes on to explain that a comedians are there to "say the unsayable."

Oswalt's comments bring to mind the time when Jerry Seinfeld made headlines earlier this year after lambasting college campuses for being too politically correct, which he said limits the topics that can be addressed in a comedy set.
