Stephen Colbert Reveals The One Thing He Finds Appealing About Donald Trump

"The party elders would like for him to go away, but the people have decided that he's not going to."

Stephen Colbert revealed the "one saving grace" of Donald Trump's candidacy in an interview that will air on CBS' "Face the Nation" Sunday.

"The Late Show" host said Trump's "populism" -- that he remains hugely popular among registered Republicans and Republican-leaning independents -- is something Colbert finds "very appealing."

"The party elders would like for him to go away, but the people have decided that he's not going to," he said.

"I may disagree with anything that he's saying and think that his proposals are a little, well more than a little shocking, but there is something really hopeful about the fact that, well 36 percent of the likely voters want him," Colbert said, referencing a recent CNN poll. "So people in the machine don't get to say otherwise. That's the one saving grace of his candidacy."

Colbert added that he respects Trump's ability to appeal to the emotions of his likely supporters, admitting he may have been "wrong" to ever posit Trump had no chances of winning the Republican nomination.

The recent CNN poll, in which Trump leads his closest opponent, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), by 20 points is certainly substantial, but it doesn't mean he has the nomination in the bag. The race remains volatile, and a recent Quinnipiac poll found that 58 percent of Republicans surveyed said they may change their mind about who they'll support before the election.

He pledged Jimmy Fallon's money to charity.
