A Typical Christmas Tree May Not Be What You Think

If you think it's a pine, just watch this.

Christmas trees come in all shapes, sizes and species -- and most of them are pines, right? Wrong.

The typical holiday tree is not of the genus Pinus, but rather a spruce or fir tree, according to a new video (above), from the popular YouTube channel MinuteEarth.

"Pines and the trees they get confused with, differ in the shape and size of their needles and cones, as well as their overall shape," says Henry Reich, the video's narrator. They are, however, members of the grand tree family Pinaceae.
