Black Harry Potter Star Has Perfect Response To Racist Backlash

Harry Potter star Noma Dumezweni is too busy breaking barriers to be fazed by the critics who say a black actress shouldn't play Hermione.

Since she was announced for the role in the play "Harry Potter and The Cursed Child" in London last December, the acclaimed British actress has received hateful comments about playing a "white character." In an interview with the Standard, she said being criticized for being a black actress playing what some consider a white character was just "unconscious" prejudice.

“It stems from ignorance," Dumezweni said. "They don’t want to be a part of the creative act. To say it’s not as it was intended is so unimaginative."

Dumezweni also told the Standard that though she's faced discrimination when auditioning for roles, she's never experienced people questioning her ability to play a role because of her race.

“The only question we should ask is ‘Are they good?’" she said. "I’ve met great actors black and white and I’ve met bad actors black and white.”
