Quarterback Johnny Manziel's ex-girlfriend told police in Fort Worth, Texas, he hit her several times and threatened to kill her last weekend.
A police report describes a violent Jan. 30 argument between the Cleveland Browns' Manziel, 23, and the 23-year-old woman that began in his Dallas hotel room and continued during a car ride to the ex-girlfriend's apartment in Fort Worth. TV station WFAA first reported about the document, which was independently obtained by HuffPost later.
"Shut up or I'll kill us both," Manziel allegedly threatened at one point, according to an unnamed source cited by WFAA.
The woman told police that Manziel, who previously spent time in rehab, acted like he was on drugs.
Manziel tersely denied the report.
"It didn't happen," he told TMZ on Thursday. "I'm completely stable. I'm safe and secure."
Fort Worth police said they determined that an assault may have occurred. Officers didn't arrest Manziel, however, because the woman was "uncooperative," and investigators "were unable to locate a crime scene within their Fort Worth jurisdiction," according to a statement from the department.
Dallas police said in a statement on Thursday that Manziel would not be charged in that city.
The woman said she was "struck several times" by Manziel, including a blow to her left ear, the police report said.
WFAA reported that the woman told police she begged a hotel valet to help her as Manziel led her outside, but the valet didn't intervene.
Manziel "struck her several times while driving her vehicle back to Fort Worth," the report said, but she "was somewhat vague on the details of the assault."
WFAA's report says Manziel talked about killing himself, but that detail doesn't appear in the police report provided to HuffPost, which includes multiple redacted portions.
The argument culminated at the ex-girlfriend's apartment, with Manziel fleeing on foot after she said she advanced on him with a kitchen knife, according to WFAA. The police report said the woman then ran to a neighbor's door to seek help.
Police said that the woman "became increasingly uncooperative," declining to answer additional questions and refusing to let officers photograph her injuries.
In his two years with the Browns, Manziel has repeatedly found himself at the center of controversy. In October, he was accused of hitting his girlfriend several times during an argument in the car. Manziel has spent 10 weeks in rehab at an alcohol and drug treatment center since becoming a pro football player
The team on Tuesday released a statement expressing frustration with the off-field incidents that have compounded Manziel's underwhelming performance on the gridiron.
ESPN reported that the Browns will release the Heisman Trophy winner in March because of this latest brush with off-field controversy.
