Trump's Presidential Plan For Gay Rights Is, Um, Well... This?

Try again, Donald.

If he becomes president, Donald Trump says voters should anticipate more forward motion on equality for gays and lesbians. Just don't expect him to elaborate further.

The 2016 Republican presidential hopeful told New England Cable News (NECN) reporter Sue O'Connell, who identified herself as a lesbian, that he plans "to bring people together" if he's elected this November.

"That's your thing and other people have their thing," Trump said in response to O'Connell's question on gay and lesbian rights. "We have to bring all people together, and if we don't, we're not going to have a country anymore."

If he's not elected, he said, "It’s gonna be a total mess. It’s a mess right now, it’s gonna be worse."

As for specifics? Well, he didn't offer any.

As vague as they were, the comments mark a shift from the GOP candidate's previous remarks on the gay and lesbian community. Trump, who is currently in New Hampshire ahead of that state's Feb. 9 primary and is opposed to same-sex marriage, has vowed to be "very strong in putting certain judges on the bench" who would consider overturning marriage equality in the U.S.

On the flip side, he has said he is fine with affirmative action and employee non-discrimination ordinances, noting that he didn't think a worker's sexuality "should be a reason" for him or her to be fired.

Sorry, Donald, but it's going to take more than a vague comment to convince us that you really care about the queer community.

Note to our readers: Donald Trump is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist, birther and bully who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims -- 1.6 billion members of an entire religion -- from entering the U.S.
