After emerging during the early 20th-century Progressive Era, the New Hampshire presidential primary celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2016.

Much has changed in the subsequent century of campaigning, but one thread that ties the past to the present is the premium that New Hampshire voters have placed on candidates who are willing to let their guards down.

This proclivity for spontaneity over caginess was seen once again in the 2016 New Hampshire Republican primary, when the often-spontaneous Donald Trump and Ohio Gov. John Kasich took home first and second place, respectively. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, meanwhile, paid a big price for his heavily scripted performance in the final debate before the polls opened.

Throughout the primary's history, candidates have also had to be careful to avoid being too freewheeling -- a lesson Gary Bauer learned during a pancake flip gone painfully awry during the 2000 campaign.

In the sixth episode of "New Hampshire," a HuffPost Originals limited series, we’ll look back at some of the key people and moments from past primaries and consider why they continue to resonate.
