This Is The Last Time We’ll Ever Be Able To Scream About Roger Goodell’s Paycheck

So let's do it right: $34.1 MILLION!?!?

For sports fans, outrage over NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s obscene paycheck has become an annual affair. Due to its longheld status as a non-profit organization, the NFL has been required to disclose the absurd amount that Goodell pockets every season ($44 million in 2012 and $35 million in 2013, for those masochistic fans who want to be in the know).

Alas, this year marks the last hurrah of that time-honored tradition. Last April, the NFL shed its non-profit, tax-exempt status in a move that many saw as more calculated than selfless. Not only was it a shrewd publicity decision after a season in which the NFL was berated for its stances on issues like domestic violence and head trauma, but its new for-profit status also means that, beginning next year, it will no longer have to reveal Goodell’s salary, eliminating this annual bump in the PR road.

So with that, let's get mad one more time: In 2014, Goodell earned more than 630 times the income of the typical American family, according to the league’s most recent tax filing. While the average household brought in $53,657, per the U.S. census, Goodell pocketed $34.1 million in salary, bonuses, pension and other benefits in that single year, according to ESPN.

To put Goodell’s paycheck into perspective, CEO of Goldman Sachs Lloyd Blankfein pulled in $24 million in compensation in 2014. The CEO of Coca-Cola Co. grabbed $25,224,422 in compensation.

And to think -- Goodell’s NFL is going to have to start paying taxes now. What a shame.
