Georgia Delivers Hillary Clinton An Easy Win In The Democratic Primary

Hillary Clinton easily won the Georgia Democratic primary on Tuesday, defeating Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and solidifying her lead in the race to amass Democratic delegates.

Clinton had consistently led Sanders in polls across the state, which awards 117 Democratic delegates on a proportional basis.

The win came on the heels of Clinton's resounding victory in the South Carolina Democratic primary, where she beat Sanders by just shy of 50 percentage points. In Georgia, Clinton enjoys broad support among African-Americans, who make up more than half of all the voters in the state's Democratic primary.

The former secretary of state has also racked up a slew of high profile endorsements in recent weeks, including those of civil rights leader and Georgia Rep. John Lewis, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, and more than a dozen state legislators. By contrast, Sanders has only had one major political endorsement in the Peach State: that of State Sen. Vincent Fort, who switched his allegiance from Clinton to Sanders.

Despite his apparent disadvantage in the state, Sanders has tried to rally support among young people by speaking to issues like student loan debt and economic inequality. Late last month, the self-proclaimed democratic socialist held a high-profile rally at Morehouse College, the prestigious historically black men's school in Atlanta. Sanders was introduced at the event by Atlanta-based rapper Killer Mike, who has become one of Sanders' most visible African-American supporters.

The buzz around Bernie, however, was no match Tuesday for the decades of voter outreach and mobilization that Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, have done in the state.
