One woman's encounter with a compassionate homeless man completely changed her outlook on those in need.
Nicole Sedgebeer, a 21-year-old who lives in Milton Keynes, England, recently missed the last train home, following a night out. A homeless man named Mark, who Sedgebeer met that night, brought her to a cafe and ended up walking her back to the station so she'd be safe.
The woman, humbled by what she experienced, documented the encounter with a selfie with the man and posted in on Facebook, in hopes of changing others' negative perceptions of homeless people.
"This man who I probably would [have] avoided eye contact with if he asked for spare change, completely changed such a negative event into the most eye opening event in my life," she wrote. "Mark you are one special man, I will never look down on a homeless person again."
According to her Facebook post, Sedgebeer arrived at the train station only to discover it locked up. She initially approached Mark to ask if there was an alternative way to get home, according to the Evening Standard. Though the man didn't know of any, he took her to the cafe so she wouldn't be walking around alone.
“I was a bit scared [of being alone] and he said he didn’t want to leave his stuff, but he still went and took me there,” the 21-year-old explained to the Evening Standard.
The two had some coffee before Mark said he needed grab his sleeping bag, however he made it clear he'd come back in time to walk Sedgebeer back to the train station when it reopened.
Sedgebeer, who waited for some time, doubted that Mark would return and eventually left the cafe under the assumption that he wouldn't show up. When she saw him running down the street so he could to escort the 21-year-old to the station, she said she was shocked.
"Not only did he turn up but he had to get a bus to come get me," Sedgebeer said in her post.
Mark went out of his way to make sure a stranger was safe, saying it was the right thing to do.
"He said ... 'It was a father's duty to get another man's daughter home safe,'" Sedgebeer shared.
