World Cup Hero Tim Howard Opens Up About His Return To Major League Soccer

You probably remember his name from the summer of 2014. You probably remember seeing him against the backdrop of a white net, leading his team as the final line of defense, diving and corralling shot after shot as the U.S. men’s national soccer team climbed its way to the knockout stage of Rio’s World Cup.

But while Tim Howard may be best known for his red-white-and-blue-shaded heroics in Brazil, Major League Soccer has missed out on his talents for over a decade now, as Howard left the league in 2003, heading east to test the waters of English Premier League play, where he’s since donned the uniforms of both Manchester United and Everton.

Now, however, Howard has decided to return to his home soil. On Sunday, the Colorado Rapids announced their signing of the world-class goalkeeper. And on the very same day, Howard opened up about all that went into his decision to move back home -- about how thankful he is for all that he’s learned overseas and how excited he is to get started with his new club and his old league.

In a video from UNINTERRUPTED on go90, the 2001 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year credited the “undying vision” of the Rapids and the league's “belief in” him for getting the deal done and getting him back to U.S. play.

“It’s hard to express in such a short period of time the raw emotion that goes into a decision such as this one,” Howard said. “I’ve played over 400 games for Everton and it truly has become my club. It’s a club that I’ve bled for, that I’ve sacrificed for and in turn has given me all of that. I truly do love this club. It’s been an honor and a privilege to pull on that shirt each and every weekend.”
