A 'Galaxy Quest' Sequel Was In The Works Before Alan Rickman's Death

In a better world, Alan Rickman would be alive and "Galaxy Quest" would have a sequel. But we are resigned to live a Rickman-less existence ever since the British actor died after a battle with cancer in January.

One of his most beloved onscreen roles was in the 1999 sci-fi comedy "Galaxy Quest," which quickly became a cult favorite due to its overt parodying of the classic "Star Trek" series and fandom. Rumors of a potential sequel have been circulating ever since the film's release, but since Rickman's death, it looks like the world won't be seeing "Galaxy Quest 2" anytime soon.

“They were going to do a sequel on Amazon,” Rickman's former co-star, Sam Rockwell, explained in a Nerdist podcast. “We were ready to sign up, and [then] Alan Rickman passed away and Tim Allen wasn’t available -- he has a show -- and everybody’s schedule was all weird. It was going to shoot, like, right now. And how do you fill that void of Alan Rickman? That’s a hard void to fill.”

Tim Allen previously weighed in on a possible continuation, speaking with The Hollywood Reporter after Rickman's death.

"I’m not supposed to say anything -- I’m speaking way out of turn here -- but 'Galaxy Quest' is really close to being resurrected in a very creative way," he said. "It’s closer than I can tell you but I can’t say more than that. The real kicker is that Alan now has to be left out. It’s been a big shock on many levels."

Allen, who said he developed a close bond with the "Harry Potter" star after a bumpy start, also remembered Rickman's special presence on set.

"[Rickman] was just an amazing person and an amazing actor," he continued. "We had these dinner parties [during the 'Galaxy Quest' production] and Alan always brought gifts whenever he came to the house. He was that kind of guy -- he had class and style and manners. But he was also gentle and funny and wonderful."
